Why the Evoluent Essentials compact keyboard?

Superficially, it's a pleasing keyboard to the eye. Furthermore, this board features a row of hotkeys at the top, which improves efficiency. Like any compact keyboard, the numeric keypad is absent, allowing you to keep your computer mouse closer, which benefits your working posture.

However, the Evoluent does still have an extra row of keys (Del, Home, End, PgUp and PgDn) on the right side.

What makes an ergonomic keyboard so good?
