An ode to the MAULsirius

He keeps an eye on things, so you don’t have to

If you pop out for a coffee and linger by the vending machine, the MAULsirius quietly dims the light a notch. If you’re away for any longer, it gives up and switches itself off. No angry notes by the door, no colleague sighing about who’s left the light on again. Just a lamp that takes care of it itself.

Why the MAULsirius?

One lamp, two types of light

The MAULsirius is an LED floor lamp for the office and home workspace. The lamp head directs 70 per cent of the light upwards towards the ceiling and 30 per cent downwards onto your desk. The indirect light softens and evenly illuminates the room, whilst the direct light provides extra illumination for your work surface. You can adjust both separately.

Warm or cool, bright or dimmed

Using the touch panel on the base, you can continuously adjust the colour temperature between 3,000 K (warm white) and 5,700 K (daylight white). Dimming is just as smooth, allowing you to set the brightness exactly to your liking. MAUL calls this ‘colour vario’. In practice: cooler light in the morning, warmer towards the end of the day.

What makes the MAUL Sirius so good?

Glare-free light with a UGR below 6

Glare is the main culprit in office lighting: bright light that shines directly into your eyes or reflects off your screen. The MAULsirius’s lamp head is designed to be non-glare, ensuring the glare rating (UGR) remains below 6. By way of comparison: the standard for office work, NEN-EN 12464-1, permits a UGR of up to 19. So you’re not looking into the lamp; you’re working in the light.

Smart sensors

The daylight sensor measures how much light is already in the room and adjusts the MAULsirius accordingly. If there is plenty of daylight, the lamp dims; if it gets dark outside, it provides more light. The motion sensor dims the light after 30 minutes of inactivity and switches the lamp off after a further 30 minutes. This ensures it never stays on for an empty chair.

Get the most out of your MAULsirius

Place the lamp next to your desk

Position the base next to the desk, with the lamp head 102 cm above your work surface. At a distance of 85 cm between the head and the desk, the direct light from the MAULsirius provides 3,360 lux; at 110 cm, it’s still 2,020 lux. The NEN-EN 12464-1 standard specifies 500 lux for office work, so in practice you’ll need to dim the lamp considerably. You’ve got plenty of headroom.

Follow the day with the colour temperature

Start the morning at around 5,000 to 5,700 K – that feels fresh and bright. Drop to around 4,000 K in the afternoon and end the day at around 3,000 K. The touch panel is situated at a height of 110 cm on the MAULsirius column, so you can adjust it as you walk past.

Energy label and consumption

The MAULsirius has two LED light sources and therefore two energy labels: one for the indirect light directed towards the ceiling and one for the direct light on your desk. Both fall into energy class D on the scale from A to G.

Indirect light (upwards): 46 kWh per 1,000 hours

Direct light (downwards): 20 kWh per 1,000 hours

What does energy class D mean?

Since 2021, a new, stricter scale has applied to light sources (EU Regulation 2019/2015). The highest classes have deliberately been reserved for technology that is not yet widely available, which means that even energy-efficient LED lighting usually falls into classes D to F. Class D is therefore a respectable score for an LED office lamp with this wattage.

How much electricity does the MAULsirius use?

At full power, both light sources together consume 66 kWh per 1,000 operating hours, which is approximately 66 watts per hour. Based on 8 hours per working day and 220 working days, this amounts to approximately 116 kWh per year.

In practice, the MAULsirius’s energy consumption is lower, as you can dim it and the sensors switch it off when no one is present. In standby mode, the lamp consumes 0 W. The full product data sheets from the European EPREL database can be found under ‘Downloads’.

Check the measurements before you order

The MAULsirius is 195.5 cm high. So check your ceiling height and make sure there’s nothing hanging above the lamp head: the indirect light must be able to shine freely onto the ceiling. The U-shaped base measures 50 x 22.5 cm and slides under or next to your desk. The detachable mains lead is 2.5 metres long, so a socket within that distance is sufficient.

Assemble it yourself

The lamp is supplied in parts: the base, the column (in two parts) and the lamp head. Using the Allen keys and M4 fixings supplied, you can assemble the MAULsirius according to the assembly instructions (see downloads). The light sources and the ballast can be replaced at a later date, but this is a job for an electrician.
