Product description of Fellowes Aeramax DX5 air purifier 8-12m²

An ode to Fellowes air purifiers

Keep it light and airy

If you get wind of a good purifier, you shouldn't ignore good advice. Many users have already aired their views about their Aeramax air purifier. You've probably heard about it, though not necessarily from that person's home. Is pollution plucked from thin air? We don't think so. Neither does Fellowes. They didn't want to build castles in the air about air purification and worked extremely hard on it.

Why the Aeramax air purifier?

Clean air is not a given

Since around 2020, we have suddenly become very aware of the importance of clean air. But even before that, the air quality in our living rooms and offices was often not great.

Indoor air can be up to 5 times more polluted than outdoor air. The particles flying around are responsible for half of all illnesses. What exactly flies through your living room?

  • 15,000 flu viruses per cubic metre
  • 42,000 live dust mites per 28 grams of dust
  • Allergens such as pollen, dust mites and mould
  • Pet dander

There's more in the air than you'd expect. Above, you've had a short summary, but the list is actually longer. Think of cigarette smoke, for example. On top of that, the air keeps getting polluted. Your pet keeps shedding dander, your ventilation system harbours mould and pollen finds its way indoors. As soon as you plop down in your chair or sofa, dust flies through the room, and you don't want to know what settles in your carpet.

How the Fellowes air purifier works

A Fellowes air purification device in your living room, bedroom or office, for example, filters out as many contaminated particles as possible and thereby freshens the air. Thanks to the filters in the device, 99.7% of particles down to 0.3 microns are filtered. How small is that? We can see dust of about 25 microns with the naked eye. A red blood cell is 7-8 microns. Fellowes has developed 4 stages to purify your air:

  1. The Carbon filter in the DX5, DX55 and DX95 Fellowes air purifiers does the coarsest work. The carbon filter captures odours and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), the larger particles.
  2. The True HEPA filter tackles the small stuff such as cigarette smoke, mould spores, bacteria, pollen and dust mites down to 0.3 microns in size.
  3. The Aerasafe antimicrobial treatment works against odours caused by bacteria, mildew and mould
  4. PlasmaTrue technology ionises a particle and renders it harmless. Ionisers are known for producing harmful ozone. Research has shown that Fellowes machines remain well below the harmful standard and are therefore safe

Measurable data thanks to Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR)

Fellowes makes air purification measurable with CADR. It is a standard developed in the United States that includes both airflow and filter efficiency in its calculation. There is a CADR value for dust, pollen and smoke. The value was developed by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers, and this organisation has also AHAM certified the Fellowes devices.

While Americans prefer to work in cubic feet per hour of air purification, Fellowes has translated this into cubic metres and converted it back to the number of square metres in a room, so you can easily select the right device. You can find a handy table below to help you choose.

User-friendly

The Aeramax devices are all user-friendly. Their weight is between 4 and 7 kilograms, they have a handle for easy relocation and maintenance is simple. Set the air purifier to its automatic mode and it adjusts its circulation speed itself. The blue (good air!), yellow (poorer air) or red (bad air) circle tells you what the air quality is.

The DX5 has 3 settings (low, medium and high), while the DX55 and DX95 also come with a 'Turbo' setting for heavy-duty work.

What makes an air purifier so good?

Thanks to an air purifier, you remove many harmful particles from the air. A HEPA air purifier with a carbon filter quickly filters viruses, allergens, dust, dander and bacteria out of the air and improves the air quality at home or in the office considerably.

Easy maintenance

Fellowes has made its devices easy to maintain. The 2 filters in the device are easy to replace and, thanks to the indicator on the device, also show when they are due by turning red. A carbon filter has had its best days after every 3 months, a HEPA filter after every 12 months. You can find the steps needed to change the filters clearly set out in the accompanying manual. If you can't work it out, let us know. The table below shows which filters your device needs.

Choose the right device for your room(s)

Using the table below, you can easily and quickly find the air purifier that suits your room size. If your room is larger, you can also combine two of them (see our tiered prices). The table also includes direct links to the matching HEPA and carbon filters, so you can be prepared for maintenance straight away if you wish.

Don't miss this either

Energy efficient thanks to Energy Star

The DX55 and DX95 carry an Energy Star label. This means they are up to 40% more energy efficient than devices without this certification.

User feedback on the Fellowes air purifiers

There is now quite a lot of experience with the Aeramax products. Fellowes actively collects feedback and it is largely positive. The devices are called effective, quiet and sleekly designed, and users indicate that they help with allergies, asthma, dog odours and COPD.

There are some critical notes too. The LED lights are sometimes experienced as bright, and on the highest setting the purifier can be a bit noisy.

Pros and cons

  • Purifies the the indoor air
  • Removes odours
  • Improves your living and/or working space

Frequently asked questions

"Does the air purifier also work against unpleasant pet odours?"
It certainly does. The carbon filter in the purifier filters these odours out of the air effectively and quickly

This is how quiet an Aeramax air purifier is (deciBelievably quiet)

The DX5, DX55 and DX95 air purifiers all produce the same amount of noise:

  • Low | <30 decibels
  • Medium | <50 decibels
  • High | <60 decibels
  • Turbo (DX55 & DX95) | <70 decibels

To give you something to go on with these figures: whispering produces around 30 decibels, a fridge around 50 decibels and a vacuum cleaner 70 decibels. On the low and/or medium setting in particular, the Aeramax air purifier can be used 24/7 without any problem.
