An ode to the Carpio AirRest pads
Saddle, helmet, palm
The same printing technique goes into bicycle saddles and into helmets for ice hockey and American football. Sports where people crash into each other at considerable speed, in other words. And now that same material sits under your palm while you type an email. A quieter life than it is used to.
Why the Carpio AirRest pads?
Air along your palm
With a closed pad your palm rests on a solid surface. The Carpio AirRest pads are built from a fine lattice pattern, which lets air pass along your hand. DeltaHub states that this reduces sweat. On a long working day that can feel more pleasant.
About half the weight
A wrist rest that slides along with your hand makes its weight noticeable. The AirRest pads weigh about half of the standard silicone pads. On a part this small that sounds abstract, but your hand carries it across your desk all day.
Softer and more resilient
The Carpio AirRest pads feel softer than the standard pads. Your palm sinks a little further into the material. DeltaHub calls this enhanced softness for better support of your hand.
AirRest or the standard pads?
Where the difference lies
Both types of pad fit the same Carpio, so the choice comes down to material and feel. The standard pads are silicone and available in ten colours. The Carpio AirRest pads are made of EPU 46 elastomer, in black only, with an open structure and less weight.
| Material | EPU 46 elastomer versus silicone |
| Structure | Open lattice versus a closed surface |
| Weight | About half of the standard pads |
| Colour | Black only versus ten colours |
| Fits | Carpio 2.0 and G2.0, the same for both types |
When the standard pads make more sense
If you mainly want a fresh pad on your Carpio, or a different colour to match your setup, the standard replacement pads are the more logical choice. The Carpio AirRest pads are there for anyone whose hands get warm quickly, or who wants the lightest feel under the hand.
How the AirRest pads are made
3D printing instead of moulding
The Carpio AirRest pads are printed using Carbon Digital Light Synthesis. That technique allows shapes moulding cannot produce, and the open lattice pattern comes out of it. The same technique is used for Fizik bicycle saddles and CCM and Riddell helmets.
Designed in Germany, produced in Italy
The AirRest pads were designed in Germany and are produced in Italy. DeltaHub states that 140 prototypes and eighteen months of testing came first. For a wrist rest component, that is quite a run-up.
Also worth knowing
One set belongs to one Carpio
A set of Carpio AirRest pads together forms the resting surface of one wrist rest. Choose left or right and you get the set for that one Carpio. Choose the version for both hands and you get the pads for two Carpios.
Swapping without tools
The AirRest pads click off and on, just like the standard Carpio pads. You need no tools and you are done within seconds. Handy if you want to alternate between two sets.
