Fellowes

Fellowes began in 1917 as Bankers Box. At the time, the focus was on manufacturing and selling cardboard archive boxes. Now, over 100 years later, they have grown into one of the world’s largest companies specialising in office furniture and equipment. With 24 locations spread across 18 countries and 5 continents, they operate as a single, cohesive global company that ensures visibility and connectivity across all divisions. Today, Fellowes’ product range is extremely extensive. From document storage to air purifiers and from mouse mats to paper shredders. At Ergowerken, however, the focus is solely on the ergonomic aspect.

Fellowes Product Development
For the product development, we’re taking a big step back in time. The origins of Fellowes all began in 1917. Harry Fellowes, then aged 31, established Fellowes & Company, Custom Clothes Makers in the centre of Chicago, Illinois. In 1918, Fellowes came into contact with Mr Nickel, who made archive boxes. Shortly afterwards, Nickel was called up to serve in the First World War and sold his business to Fellowes. He named it the Bankers Box Company. Later, Nickel returned from the war and joined the company as a minority shareholder.
The Liberty Box was developed. Whenever Harry Fellowes went on holiday, he would load his car full of these boxes. On the way, he would stop, give a sales pitch to local business owners and leave a sample behind. Later, Harry changed his sales strategy and began working with stationery dealers. In the 1930s, the Bankers Box Company gradually evolved from a regional to a national manufacturer. During the Great Depression in 1932, Harry’s son Folger leaves university to help his father sell products. His son John also left school in 1938, but both were later called up to serve in the army during the Second World War. It was a difficult time, but the company survived and the sons returned. Eventually, they took over the business from their father in 1950.
Business was going well. In 1972, Bankers Box Company expanded abroad with a branch in the United Kingdom. They worked hard on product development, and in 1982 the first commercial paper shredders were sold. As the company was now selling not only archive boxes but also paper shredders and computer accessories, the company’s name was changed to Fellowes Manufacturing in 1983. Meanwhile, they continued to expand with locations in Europe, Asia and Australia. In 1998, the range was expanded to include a binding and laminating product line.
Two years later, the name was changed again to Fellowes Inc. Over time, products were improved. For example, in 2005 a new paper shredder was launched to enable secure shredding. Three years later, Fellowes introduced a 100% Jam Proof paper shredder that never jams. In 2013, the AeraMax was introduced. This is an air purifier that improves air quality at home. A year later, the AeraMax Pro was launched, specifically for offices and other commercial spaces. In 2014, Fellowes introduced AutoMax™ Autofeed paper shredders. You can simply place a stack of paper inside and then carry on with your work. The shredder does the rest. They didn’t rest on their laurels, and in the same year they launched the Give charity programme, through which they invest in social services, global aid and development, education and cancer research. The name was changed again in 2015, this time to Fellowes Brands. In 2017, the company celebrated its 100th anniversary.

Meet Emma
Emma is a life-size doll. She reflects what we might look like in 20 years’ time if we don’t take ergonomics seriously and continue to work in poor posture and at poorly set-up workstations. Like 36% of the Dutch population, she suffers from a stiff neck, a sore back (21%) and headaches (31%). Emma’s appearance may be somewhat exaggerated, but this is (unfortunately) the reality. Don’t wait too long – check whether your workstation is ergonomically designed. Could you use some extra help with this? Click here.
Fellowes focuses on the continuous improvement of its products, and strives to deliver the best quality and performance in archive storage, office equipment (paper shredders, binding machines, etc.), air purification and office accessories. As a result, the ergonomic workplace will also be in a state of continuous development, and in 20 years’ time we won’t look like Emma.
Product reviews
Fellowes has a wide range of products. At Ergowerken, around 70 of these can be found in the online shop. Many of these products have received very positive reviews.
The Crystals Flex wrist rest, for example, has a rating of 4.4/5.0 stars. Danielle was initially hesitant, but ultimately satisfied. She says: “On Ergowerken’s recommendation, I haven’t regretted it for a moment and have even ordered a second one in the meantime”. Lucas says it’s a lifesaver for gamers: “The pad provides just the right amount of support and takes all the pressure away. The material stays cool and is easy to keep clean.”
Our customers are also satisfied with the Back Angel backrest. Linda even uses it in the car. “I’m absolutely delighted with it! I no longer get out of the car feeling stiff. It moves with you and provides full support!!”. Dv A. notes that adjusting it is a bit tricky, though.
The reviews of the Hana laptop stand are also full of praise. Wim is particularly pleased with the built-in USB hub. “That way, you don’t have to keep plugging external USB devices into the laptop and you can just leave your keyboard, mouse and card reader connected.” Saskia is particularly pleased with the adjustability and recommends it to everyone. We do too, Saskia!
