An ode to the Angle Lamp 01

Done is done

The Angle Lamp 01 has just one button, and even that one tries hard not to stand out. During the day it quietly charges your phone through the USB port in the base. At the end of the day you fold the lamp head flat against the column. Unless you know where it is, you will hardly notice it.

Why the Angle Lamp 01?

Compact light with a USB port

The Angle Lamp 01 by Forming Function is an LED desk lamp with a round 14.8 cm base and a 42 cm lamp head. The base has a USB-A port (5 V, 2.1 A) to charge your phone or tablet. The Angle Lamp 01 used to be called NIILA: the same lamp, with a new name.

Five light settings with one button

With the touch button on the base you switch the Angle Lamp 01 on and choose one of five settings: 220, 440, 660, 880 and 1100 lux. The light colour is fixed at 4,000 K (neutral white). Nice and simple: one button for everything.

Good light on your desk

A bright lamp is not automatically a good desk lamp. You only notice after a few hours under the wrong light: you lean closer and closer to your screen, small print gets harder to read and you keep turning your paper towards the window.

Four things to look for

For workplaces there is simply a standard, EN 12464-1. It asks for 500 lux on your work surface when you read, write or type. Colours should look natural, with a colour rendering (Ra) of at least 80. And the light must not dazzle you or reflect in your screen, and ideally falls evenly across your whole desk.

How the Angle Lamp 01 does it

With a colour rendering of 95 the Angle Lamp 01 is well above that, so you can judge colour samples and photos right at your desk. You choose the five settings yourself. Tilt the lamp head so the light falls on your work and not in your eyes. Handy if you keep working for a bit in the evening.

What makes the Angle Lamp 01 so good?

Colours as they really are

The LED light source of the Angle Lamp 01 has a colour rendering index (CRI) of 95. That scale goes up to 100, the value of daylight. The closer to 100, the more natural colours look.

Switches itself off

The Angle Lamp 01 has an eco timer: after 4 hours the lamp switches off automatically. If you forget it in the evening, it will not burn all night.

Tilting and folding the lamp head

The lamp head of the Angle Lamp 01 turns from 0 to 130 degrees relative to the column. That lets you angle the light onto your work surface, or fold the head completely flat against the column when you are not using the lamp. Unfolded, the lamp is up to 45.5 cm tall.

The best spot on your desk

If you write with your right hand, place the Angle Lamp 01 to the left of your work surface, and the other way round. That way the shadow of your hand does not fall over what you write. Angle the lamp head so you do not look straight into the light strip.

Energy label and consumption

The Angle Lamp 01 has a built-in LED light source. It falls into energy class F on the scale from A to G, with a consumption of 5 kWh per 1,000 hours of use.

What does energy class F mean?

Since 2021 a stricter scale applies to light sources (EU Regulation 2019/2015). The class depends on how many lumens a light source gives per watt, with a correction for the type of light source. The Angle Lamp 01 gives 84 lumens per watt and therefore ends up in class F.

How much electricity does the Angle Lamp 01 use?

At full power the Angle Lamp 01 uses 5 kWh per 1,000 hours of use, roughly 5 watts per hour. At 8 hours per working day and 220 working days, that comes to about 9 kWh per year. You can also find the energy label as a PDF under downloads.

Measure before you order

The base of the Angle Lamp 01 has a diameter of 14.8 cm and the lamp head is 42 cm long. Unfolded, the lamp is up to 45.5 cm tall. The adapter has a 1.5 metre cable, so a socket within that distance is enough.

Indoor use only

The Angle Lamp 01 has protection rating IP20 and is made for a dry indoor room. Do not put anything on the lamp head: the lamp must not be covered.
