An ode to the K1 SE

Settle in

Normally, we use this section of text to write something fun and light-hearted about a product. However, I want to use it now to ensure you settle in with a cup of coffee or tea before you start reading, because there's quite a bit to tell about the K1. Are you settled? Perhaps a biscuit too? Why the K1 SE?

The K1 SE gives you all the keys and functions you need in a compact size. This means that a numeric keypad is absent, for ergonomic reasons, but it does have hotkeys that can be used by pressing combination keys. The K1 SE is unique because it has mechanical keys, is flat, and is hot-swappable!

The K1 SE's connectivity is fantastic. Via Bluetooth, you can wirelessly connect up to three devices to the keyboard simultaneously. With the toggle switch, you can quickly switch between your connected devices. For example, one moment you might be working on your laptop, and the next you can quickly type a WhatsApp message about dinner. A fourth device can be connected with a cable (USB). Of course, connecting a single device and using the USB cable for that is also possible.

What makes the K1 SE so good?

Anyone who performs a lot of computer work knows that this can be strenuous for your wrists, shoulders, back, and neck. A good keyboard can help you with this. The K1 SE, for example, has a flat design. The keys are also extra easy to press. Furthermore, the numeric keypad is absent so that you can place your mouse closer to you. All of this is to minimise muscle tension, thereby preventing or reducing injuries.

Get the most out of your K1 SE

Compared to the K1 (which is made entirely of aluminium), the K1 SE has a reinforced aluminium top case and a plastic bottom. Additionally, the K1 SE is highly customisable because the keyboard is hot-swappable. Keychron supplies their own Low-Profile Optical switches as standard, but you can install any type of Low-Profile optical switch you want later. Finally, the K1 SE has two height-adjustable rubber feet that make ergonomic working even better than its predecessor.

The K1 SE can be updated to remove any production and/or design flaws. Therefore, regularly check this Keychron page to see if updates are available. Please note: Read the instructions on this page carefully, as downloading the wrong firmware can be fatal for the keyboard.

Difference from the regular K1

When we compare the K1 & K1 SE side-by-side, we see a few small differences;

• • The K1 SE has an aluminium top case and plastic bottom (K1 is fully aluminium)
• • Different switches: choice of Low Profile Optical Switch (Hot Swappable!)
• • 550 grams for the K1 SE and 650 grams for the K1
• • The K1 SE has rubber feet for better support
