An ode to the K4 Ultra 8K
Suitcase shut, nothing left behind
You know the holiday struggle: everything has to come along, but the suitcase still has to close. The K4 Ultra 8K solved that packing problem.
Function keys, arrows and a number pad sit neatly pushed together. Nobody complains. Except your mouse, which is suddenly a bit closer.
Why the K4 Ultra 8K?
A number pad without the extra width
The Keychron K4 Ultra 8K is a mechanical keyboard with a 96% layout and 100 keys. You keep the function row, the arrow keys and the number pad, but the separate blocks are pushed together. At 391.3 mm, the K4 Ultra 8K stays narrower than a classic full size keyboard.
That saves space on your desk and brings your mouse closer to your keyboard. A shorter reach to the mouse can help reduce how far your shoulder turns outwards. Handy if you enter numbers every day and do not want a separate number pad.
Made for people who type a lot
The K4 Ultra 8K is built for long days of typing: admin work, spreadsheets, writing or programming. The double shot PBT keycaps have legends that do not wear off and feel less greasy over time than regular plastic keys. The large keys stay steady thanks to screw-in stabilisers on the circuit board.
What makes the K4 Ultra 8K so good?
Three ways to connect
You connect the K4 Ultra 8K with the included 2.4 GHz receiver, over Bluetooth 5.2 or with a USB-C cable. Over Bluetooth the keyboard remembers three devices. A key combination switches between your laptop, your desktop and your tablet.
Wired and via 2.4 GHz, the K4 Ultra 8K is set to 1000 Hz by default. In Keychron Launcher you can raise that to 8000 Hz if you like. For typing, 1000 Hz is more than enough, so think of it as an extra option. Over Bluetooth the keyboard runs at 125 Hz.
Long wireless sessions
The K4 Ultra 8K has a 4000 mAh battery that lasts up to 600 hours according to Keychron, measured in 8K mode with the backlight off. A full charge takes about 5 hours and you can keep typing while it charges.
Apex switches in Red or Brown
The K4 Ultra 8K comes with factory lubed Keychron Apex switches. The Red switch is linear and quiet: it travels down without a noticeable bump at about 45 grams of force. The Brown switch is softly tactile with a small bump you can feel and needs about 50 grams.
When choosing a switch for the K4 Ultra 8K there is no right or wrong: it comes down to what feels good to you. Read more about mechanical switches and how they differ.
Dampened sound
Inside the K4 Ultra 8K are several layers of foam (EVA, IXPE and EPDM) and a silicone pad in the bottom case. They help dampen hollow clacks and vibrations. It is still a mechanical keyboard, so it is not completely silent.
Get the most out of your K4 Ultra 8K
Customise keys with Keychron Launcher
The K4 Ultra 8K runs on ZMK firmware. With the Keychron Launcher web app you can give any key a new function and create macros, for example for standard texts or shortcuts in your accounting software. Open Launcher in a recent version of Chrome, Edge or Opera, with the keyboard connected by cable.
A useful tip from the manual: the K4 Ultra 8K has separate layers for Mac (layers 0 and 1) and Windows (layers 2 and 3). If you work on Windows, edit layer 2 rather than the top layer. That saves a lot of searching.
Swap switches without soldering
The K4 Ultra 8K is hot swappable. With the included puller you pull a switch out and press another one in. That way you can move from linear to tactile later on without buying a new keyboard.
You should not miss this either
For Mac and Windows
At the top left of the K4 Ultra 8K is a small switch to toggle between Mac and Windows. The box includes extra keycaps for both systems. Linux works too, there are just no dedicated keycaps for it.
Measure first
The K4 Ultra 8K is 30.9 mm high at the back without keycaps, and the keycaps add a bit more. That is higher than a flat laptop keyboard. A wrist rest at the same height as the front edge can help keep your wrists straight. If you are after the flattest keyboard possible, have a look at the Keychron K3 Ultra 8K.
Plastic case
The case of the K4 Ultra 8K is made of ABS plastic, with a steel plate holding the switches. At 1241 grams, the keyboard sits firmly on your desk.
US layout
The K4 Ultra 8K has an American QWERTY layout (ANSI) with a wide, single row Enter key. If you are used to a European ISO layout, a few keys around Enter and the left Shift sit slightly differently.

Frequently asked questions
Which switch suits you?
With this keyboard you choose which switches go underneath. They cost the same, so it comes down to preference. A linear switch travels smoothly with no noticeable bump; a tactile switch has one, and a clicky switch lets you hear it too.
![]() | ![]() | |
| Type:Linear travels evenly. Tactile has a noticeable bump. Clicky adds an audible click to that bump. | Linear | Tactile |
| Actuation force:Force:The force needed to register a keystroke. A regular rubber dome keyboard needs 55 to 60 g, so lower means lighter typing. | 45 g | 50 g |
| Tactile bump force:Bump force:The force at the point where you clearly feel the key give way. Only tactile and clicky switches have this; a linear switch does not. A dash means the switch does have one, but the manufacturer states no figure. Technical term: pressure point force. | Not applicable | – |
| Registers after:The distance the key travels before the keystroke registers. You do not have to press the key all the way down. Technical term: pre-travel or actuation point. | 2.0 mm | 2.0 mm |
| Full travel:Travel:The total distance until the key can go no further. | 4.0 mm | 4.0 mm |
| Sound:Indication for normal typing. Even a silent switch makes noise if you bottom out the key. | Quiet | Gentle |
