An ode to the Keychron Q1 Ultra 8K
A rock with a soft voice
The Q1 Ultra 8K is the kind of colleague who won't budge, not even when you bump into it with your elbow. A rock in a stormy sea, except this one says a soft "thock" with every key instead of clattering. Your coffee may wobble. The keyboard stays put.
Why the Keychron Q1 Ultra 8K?
All aluminium, compact 75%
The Keychron Q1 Ultra 8K is a mechanical keyboard with a CNC-machined aluminium case. At 1724 grams it sits firmly on your desk. The 75% layout drops the number pad but keeps the function keys, the arrow keys and a knob in the top right corner. That lets your mouse sit closer to your keyboard.
Built for long typing days
If you spend the day writing emails, reports or code, what you notice most is how a keyboard feels and sounds. The Q1 Ultra 8K uses a double-gasket design: silicone pads between the top and bottom case absorb vibrations. Together with six layers of foam and film inside the case, this gives a muted, full keystroke with less echo.
What makes the Q1 Ultra 8K so good?
Keychron Silk POM switches: Red or Brown
Underneath the keycaps of the Q1 Ultra 8K sit Keychron Silk POM switches. The housing and stem are made of POM, a smooth plastic, and the switches are lubed at the factory. You can choose between Red and Brown.
The Red is linear: the key travels down in one smooth motion, without a noticeable bump. The Brown is tactile and gives a slight bump as you press, so you can feel that the keystroke has registered. If you type a lot and like that sense of a key "landing", Brown is a sensible place to start. You can read more about the different types on the mechanical switches page.
Wireless or wired
You can connect the Q1 Ultra 8K in three ways: via Bluetooth 5.3 to up to three devices, via the included 2.4 GHz receiver, or with the USB-C cable. A switch at the back right lets you choose the connection. Handy if you move between a laptop, a tablet and a desktop computer.
Long battery life
The Q1 Ultra 8K has a 4000 mAh battery. Keychron quotes up to 660 hours of use with the backlight off and up to 200 hours with RGB at the lowest brightness. You can simply keep typing while it charges.
8000 Hz polling rate
Wired and via the 2.4 GHz receiver, the Q1 Ultra 8K reports keystrokes to your computer up to 8000 times per second. Over Bluetooth that is 125 times per second. For typing this is mainly a technical specification: in emails and documents you will notice little difference from a regular keyboard.
Get the most out of your Q1 Ultra 8K
Remapping keys with Keychron Launcher
With Keychron Launcher, a web app for Chrome, Edge and Opera, you can give every key on the Q1 Ultra 8K a different function. You can also create macros, such as a standard greeting or a key combination you use often. There is nothing to install: connect the keyboard with the cable and open the web app.
One keyboard for Mac and Windows
The Q1 Ultra 8K comes with keycaps for both Mac and Windows. The system switch at the back right lets you change between the two, and the keyboard stores a separate layout for each system. Handy if you use a MacBook at home and a Windows laptop at the office.
Lighting the way you like it
The RGB backlight of the Q1 Ultra 8K faces towards you and offers more than 22 effects, including a calm white setting. In Launcher you can even set a colour per key. If you prefer to work without lighting, press fn + tab to turn it off.
Swapping switches yourself
The Q1 Ultra 8K is hot-swappable. You pull a switch out with the included puller and press in a different one, without soldering. Almost all 3-pin and 5-pin MX switches fit, for example from Cherry, Gateron or Kailh.
You should not miss this either
Mind the height
Without keycaps, the front of the Q1 Ultra 8K is already 20.7 mm high, and the keycaps add to that. The typing angle is fixed at 5.3 degrees. If you type a lot, a wrist rest at the same height is comfortable, so your wrists don't have to bend upwards as far.
Heavy, and that is intentional
At 1724 grams, the Q1 Ultra 8K is not a keyboard to carry in your laptop bag every day. On a fixed workstation that weight is a plus: the Q1 Ultra 8K does not slide around while you type.
No number pad
If you work with figures a lot in Excel or accounting software, you will miss the number pad on the Q1 Ultra 8K. A full-size keyboard or a separate numeric keypad is then a better fit for your work.
US layout
The Q1 Ultra 8K has an American ANSI layout (QWERTY) with a wide, single-row Enter key. Accented characters such as é and ë can be typed through your computer's keyboard setting, for example US International.
Pros and cons
- All-aluminium case that stays in place
- Muted keystroke thanks to gasket design and foam layers
- Bluetooth, 2.4 GHz and cable
- Mac and Windows keycaps in the box
- Nice if you want to remap keys without installing software
- Less ideal if you are used to a flat keyboard
- Less ideal if you enter a lot of numbers

Frequently asked questions
Which switch suits you?
With this keyboard you choose which switches go underneath. They cost the same, so it comes down to preference. A linear switch travels smoothly with no noticeable bump; a tactile switch has one, and a clicky switch lets you hear it too.
![]() | ![]() | |
| Type:Linear travels evenly. Tactile has a noticeable bump. Clicky adds an audible click to that bump. | Linear | Tactile |
| Actuation force:Force:The force needed to register a keystroke. A regular rubber dome keyboard needs 55 to 60 g, so lower means lighter typing. | 45 g | 55 g |
| Tactile bump force:Bump force:The force at the point where you clearly feel the key give way. Only tactile and clicky switches have this; a linear switch does not. A dash means the switch does have one, but the manufacturer states no figure. Technical term: pressure point force. | Not applicable | – |
| Registers after:The distance the key travels before the keystroke registers. You do not have to press the key all the way down. Technical term: pre-travel or actuation point. | 2.0 mm | 2.0 mm |
