An ode to the K3 Ultra 8K
Furniture you can type on
Some keyboards just sit on your desk. Others dress it up. The K3 Ultra 8K belongs to the second group.
It is so flat you almost overlook it, until the light catches that bit of wood. Suddenly your whole workspace looks a little more grown up. Your colleagues too, by the way.
Why the K3 Ultra 8K?
Flat typing with a short key travel
The Keychron K3 Ultra 8K is a low profile mechanical keyboard. The switches are 11.9 mm tall and the case is 16.6 mm high at the front (without keycaps). Your hands rest lower than on a regular mechanical keyboard. A lower keyboard can help keep your wrists from bending upwards while you type.
The flat LSA keycaps on the K3 Ultra 8K have a slightly rounded top, so your fingertips find the keys easily. If you are used to a laptop keyboard, you will settle in quickly.
Compact 75% size
The K3 Ultra 8K has a 75% layout with 84 keys. The function row and arrow keys are there, only the number pad is left out. At 320.6 mm wide, your mouse sits a lot closer to your keyboard. That can help reduce how far your right shoulder turns outwards.
What makes the K3 Ultra 8K so good?
Three ways to connect
You connect the K3 Ultra 8K with the included 2.4 GHz receiver, over Bluetooth 5.2 or with a USB-C cable. Over Bluetooth the keyboard remembers three devices. A key combination switches between your laptop, your desktop and your tablet.
Wired and over the 2.4 GHz receiver, the K3 Ultra 8K reaches a polling rate of up to 8000 Hz. You will hardly notice that while typing, but it does mean wireless can respond just as quickly as wired. Over Bluetooth it runs at 125 Hz, which is plenty for office work.
Long wireless sessions
The K3 Ultra 8K has a 2600 mAh battery that lasts up to 550 hours according to Keychron, measured in 8K mode with the backlight off. A full charge takes about 3.8 hours and you can keep typing while it charges.
Milk POM switches in Red or Brown
The K3 Ultra 8K comes with factory lubed Keychron Milk POM low profile switches. The Red switch is linear: it travels down without a noticeable bump and needs about 45 grams of force. The Brown switch is tactile and gives a small bump at the actuation point, so you can feel that the keystroke has registered.
When choosing a switch for the K3 Ultra 8K there is no right or wrong: it comes down to what feels good to you. Read more about mechanical switches and how they differ.
Dampened sound
Inside the K3 Ultra 8K are several layers of foam (IXPE, EPDM and latex), plus an extra dampening layer in the bottom case. They help dampen hollow clacks and vibrations. It is still a mechanical keyboard, so it is not completely silent.

Customise keys with Keychron Launcher
The K3 Ultra 8K runs on ZMK firmware. With the Keychron Launcher web app you can give any key a new function and create macros, for example a standard greeting or a shortcut for your email program. Open Launcher in a recent version of Chrome, Edge or Opera, with the keyboard connected by cable.
A useful tip from the manual: the K3 Ultra 8K has separate layers for Mac (layers 0 and 1) and Windows (layers 2 and 3). If you work on Windows, edit layer 2 rather than the top layer. That saves a lot of searching.
Swap switches without soldering
The K3 Ultra 8K is hot swappable. With the included puller you pull a switch out and press another one in. Keep in mind that you need low profile switches for this, such as the separate Keychron Milk POM switches.
You should not miss this either
For Mac and Windows
On the side of the K3 Ultra 8K is a small switch to toggle between Mac and Windows. The box includes extra keycaps for both systems. Linux works too, there are just no dedicated keycaps for it.
Aluminium and wood
The top of the K3 Ultra 8K combines a metal frame with natural wood. The plate holding the switches is made of anodised aluminium. At 566 grams, the keyboard is light enough to take to the office.
US layout
The K3 Ultra 8K has an American QWERTY layout (ANSI) with a wide, single row Enter key. If you are used to a European ISO layout, a few keys around Enter and the left Shift sit slightly differently.
Pros and cons
- Flat low profile design for a lower hand position
- Wireless via 2.4 GHz or Bluetooth, or wired
- Up to 550 hours of battery life with the backlight off
- Nice if you switch between Mac and Windows
- Less ideal if you often enter numbers, there is no number pad
- Less ideal if you want to fit regular (not low profile) switches
- Mechanical keys make more noise than a laptop keyboard

Frequently asked questions
Which switch suits you?
With this keyboard you choose which switches go underneath. They cost the same, so it comes down to preference. A linear switch travels smoothly with no noticeable bump; a tactile switch has one, and a clicky switch lets you hear it too.
![]() | ![]() | |
| Type:Linear travels evenly. Tactile has a noticeable bump. Clicky adds an audible click to that bump. | Linear | Tactile |
| Actuation force:Force:The force needed to register a keystroke. A regular rubber dome keyboard needs 55 to 60 g, so lower means lighter typing. | 45 g | 50 g |
| Tactile bump force:Bump force:The force at the point where you clearly feel the key give way. Only tactile and clicky switches have this; a linear switch does not. A dash means the switch does have one, but the manufacturer states no figure. Technical term: pressure point force. | Not applicable | – |
| Registers after:The distance the key travels before the keystroke registers. You do not have to press the key all the way down. Technical term: pre-travel or actuation point. | 1.3 mm | 1.7 mm |
| Full travel:Travel:The total distance until the key can go no further. | 3.1 mm | 3.1 mm |
| Lifespan:The number of keystrokes per key stated by the manufacturer. | 50 million | 50 million |
| Sound:Indication for normal typing. Even a silent switch makes noise if you bottom out the key. | Low | Medium |
