A tribute to the Deskbike

Cycle to... work

It’s always the same old hassle with those cyclists. They’re literally everywhere and won’t give way to anyone. On the road, on the pavement, at my desk, in the meeting room. I even spotted one in the lift the other day. They’re mad.

Why the Deskbike Large?

Getting active at work

Cycling is good for you. That’s why we’re cycling more and more. Alongside city bikes, e-bikes, mountain bikes, e-mountain bikes and countless other types, there’s also the Deskbike. A bike that fits under your desk.

Most workplaces are perfectly suited to it. Thanks to the widely used electric sit-stand desks, you can raise the desk top slightly to accommodate the Deskbike Large. Because, as we now know, simply standing still is certainly not enough to get your daily dose of exercise.

Active working posture

You’re probably already adopting an active working posture, especially if you work long hours in the office. Alternating between sitting and standing, using the stairs, fetching a drink for colleagues. With the Deskbike Large, you can add a new dimension that really gets you moving.

Whilst cycling, you can see straight away that your heart rate is going up. Whereas I have a heart rate of around 50 to 60 beats per minute when sitting, I can increase that to around 70 to 80 just by cycling very gently on the Deskbike. Are you wearing a jumper? Make sure you have a T-shirt on underneath so you don’t get too hot.

Designed for heights of 185 to 215 cm

The Deskbike Large has a longer frame and a longer seat post than the Original. This means that even if you’re up to 215 cm tall, you’ll still have a comfortable leg stretch whilst sitting on the saddle.

That longer frame does, however, require more space beneath your desk top. You’ll need a desk height of at least 115 cm – ten centimetres more than for the Deskbike Original. If you’re shorter than 185 cm, the Original is the better choice.

Adjustable resistance

You can set the resistance yourself using the dial on the Deskbike Large. The dial is quite easy to operate from a seated position. The lightest setting turns wonderfully smoothly, whilst the heaviest setting really offers some resistance. From the lightest setting, the dial turns just under seven times before reaching the heaviest setting, so don’t be afraid to give it a good turn.

What makes the Deskbike Large so good?

The Deskbike Large really puts your body to work, and you can keep it up for quite a long time. With an office job, you often can’t walk around enough to get your daily dose of exercise. With a desk bike, that’s a thing of the past.

Get the most out of your Deskbike Large

Vary your position regularly

Changing your posture isn’t just good for you, it’s also more comfortable. With the Deskbike Large, we recommend cycling for a maximum of 30 minutes. The relatively large comfort saddle can become a bit uncomfortable over time and make your bottom feel numb. As soon as you feel that, it’s best to switch to sitting or standing.

Storage and use

The Deskbike Large can be folded away for storage. You do this using the locking pin located in the frame. When unfolded, it’s about 89 cm deep; when folded, just 33 cm. So it never gets in the way when you want to sit or stand.

Thanks to the four castors under the Deskbike, it’s also mobile, so you never have to lift the 15 kg bike. The castors are handy whilst cycling too, as they make it easy to find the right position relative to your desk.

Don’t miss this either

Definitely suitable for fitness enthusiasts too

The Deskbike Large certainly won’t offer you the same sporting experience as a Wahoo Kickr or Tacx bike trainer. You don’t have the grip of handlebars, and the resistance can’t be replicated either. Nevertheless, you can use the Deskbike to support your sporting ambitions.

Do you exercise before or after work? Then having a bike under your desk is the perfect way to warm up or cool down. Before your workout, you can have a nice warm-up ride and get your heart rate up a bit. After a strenuous session, it’s perfect for giving your legs a low-intensity workout.

Assembling your Deskbike Large

The Deskbike Large is delivered to your home unassembled. With the help of the assembly video shown here and the manual available under the ‘Downloads’ section, it’s fairly straightforward to put it together.

The Deskbike app and sensor

With the optional Bluetooth sensor, you can track your rides on the Deskbike Large in the free Deskbike app. The app has been completely rebuilt and is now at version 2.0.1.

What the app tracks

Whilst cycling, you can see your speed, the time in minutes, the distance and an estimate of calories burnt. This estimate is calculated using your weight, speed and the duration of your ride. Your activity is tracked by day, week, month and year.

Syncing with Apple Health and Strava

The Deskbike app syncs with Apple Health and Strava. This means your rides at your desk will appear in the same overview as your other activities. If you create an account, your progress is stored in the cloud and you can access it on another device.

Installing the sensor

First, charge the sensor for at least 10 minutes using the supplied USB-C cable. Then attach it to the back of the Deskbike using the magnet and plug the connector into the socket. Turn on Bluetooth, open the app and start cycling. Select your own Deskbike using the number on the back of the sensor.

To check the battery level, press the sensor button once briefly and then hold it down. The app will recognise your sensor and connect automatically. If you want to track your activity throughout the day, leave the app running in the background.

Frequently asked questions

“How high does my desk need to be for the Deskbike Large?”
At least 115 cm. The Deskbike Large has a longer frame than the Original and therefore requires more space under your desk top. A sit-stand desk is therefore required. For the Deskbike Original, a minimum of 105 cm is sufficient.
“Which size Deskbike do I need for my height?”
That depends on your height. If you’re between 185 and 215 cm, choose the Deskbike Large. If you’re between 140 and 185 cm, you’ll need the Deskbike Original, which covers that entire range with two seat posts.
"Do I need the sensor to use the Deskbike app?"
Yes. The Deskbike app reads your speed and cadence from the separate Bluetooth sensor, so without that sensor, the app cannot track your rides. The app itself is free and available on the App Store and Google Play.
"My Deskbike has started to make a bit of a squeaking noise over time. Why is this?"
It’s possible that a screw on the Deskbike has come loose due to frequent use. Check them one by one to see if you can tighten them a little.
