The Variable™ is one of those chairs that looks different and also feels genuinely different to sit on. Not stiffly upright, not slumped, but rather mobile. You sit more actively, change posture more easily, and your body gets a little more space to find its own way. Nicely simple.

Why this product?

The original kneeling chair with room to move

The Variable™ is Peter Opsvik's original kneeling chair from 1979. This ergonomic kneeling chair, or balance chair, is designed to allow movement while sitting rather than restricting it. You can alternate between a kneeling posture and more traditional sitting postures, without the chair immediately feeling 'fixed'.

More open hip angle, calmer upper body

The tilted seat helps to open your hip angle. This allows your spine to more easily adopt the natural curve you have when standing. Varier indicates that this can reduce the strain on your lower back, neck, and shoulders. Useful if you notice that sitting still for long periods quickly wears you out.

Explanation of use

Change posture often

The Variable™ performs best when you keep moving on it. You can rest your shins on the cushions, place one foot on the floor, keep both feet on the floor, or sit differently in between. That variation is precisely the intention.

The rocking motion is part of it

The curved wooden runners provide a gentle rocking motion. As a result, the chair naturally follows small changes in posture. Lean slightly forward, come back, stretch out for a moment. The chair moves with you, instead of keeping you stuck in one place.

Ergonomic benefits

What makes this kneeling chair pleasant is not just the posture itself, but especially the variation it offers. The open hip angle, the shin support, and the ability to sit slightly differently each time collectively create a more active sitting experience. This can be beneficial if you want to work less statically and relieve your back, neck, or shoulders a little.

The Variable™ can be used with standard desk tops of approximately 71 to 76 cm high. Varier also provides a guideline of approximately 150 to 205 cm body height and a maximum load of up to 110 kg. This makes it surprisingly accessible for many workstations.

Be sure to check the height of your desk. If your work surface is roughly between 71 and 76 cm, this chair will fit well. If it's clearly above or below that, be aware that the match might be less logical.
